The course is designed for Beginners who want to become a Self-Erector Crane / Remote Operated Crane Operator in the Construction Industry.

Before taking part, participants are required to have a valid Safe Pass Ticket and have completed at least 3 months on-site experience.

After six months work experience on the Self-Erector Crane / Remote Operated Crane participants must attend a one-day assessment. On successful completion participants will receive a QQI certificate & SOLAS CSCS Card

Slinger/Signaller

The course is designed for Beginners who want to become a Slinger/Signaller Operator in the Construction Industry

Before taking part, participants are required to have a valid Safe Pass Ticket and have completed at least three months’ on-site experience.

After six months’ work experience on the Slinger/Signaller participants must attend a one day assessment. On successful completion participants will receive a QIcertificate & SOLAS CSCS Card.

CSCS – Yellow Experienced Operator Card

This card is available if you are a trainee and are registered for a qualification that leads to a skilled CSCS card (in the majority of cases a NVQ/SVQ). Please note: SSSTS, SMSTS and NEBOSH General will not be accepted as routes to a Trainee card.

The card is valid for five years and can not be renewed.

Prior to applying for the Trainee card applicants must have completed the appropriate CITB Health, Safety and Environment Test.

On completion of your qualification, you are expected to move onto the appropriate skilled CSCS card for your occupation.

Skilled Utilities Operator Traineeship

The Skilled Utilities Operator Traineeship is a fully funded 13-month training programme which will provide you with the skills and knowledge you need to deliver infrastructure for utilities companies. 

Upon successful completion of the Traineeship, you will achieve a CABWI Level 2 Diploma in Network Construction Operations – Water Main Layer (Self Lay & Distribution) as well as many essential industry-recognised training qualifications. 

The simulated site training at Mount Lucas, as well as a recognised qualification, will prepare you for a career in a progressive industry with many pathways for promotion and self-employment. 

In order to participate on this programme, you must be at least 18 years old, be reliable, have a strong work ethic and be willing to work as part of a team in an outdoor environment.

Phase 1: (11 weeks) Simulated Site Training at Mount Lucas

This introductory phase will immerse you in the construction industry, focusing on the importance of site safety and how to uphold it effectively. This initial stage is designed to prepare you for a hands-on experience on a real construction site in Phase 2, equipping you with the skills and confidence to work professionally and safely. You’ll complete essential certifications, including:

Phase 2: (12 weeks) Work Placement

This Phase allows candidates to apply the skills learned in Phase 1 to a real life work environment.

 

Phase 3: (12 weeks) Simulated Site Training at Mount Lucas

In this phase, you’ll build on the knowledge and experience gained during your work placement. After gaining an understanding of the inner workings of a construction site, you’ll now have the opportunity to apply what you’ve learned in real-life situations on our simulated site. Our utility tutors will support you in further developing your skills and introducing new practical tasks that deepen your learning. This phase also marks the beginning of your formal coursework, where you’ll start modules leading toward your diploma. This stage is designed to reinforce your practical skills while expanding your theoretical knowledge, setting a strong foundation for your career in construction. Some of the practical work you will learn:

  • Creating & maintaining an efficient, effective, safe & secure environment in the utilities sector
  • Install equipment for safe working on sites & on the highway
  • Locate & avoid supply apparatus
  • Excavate & maintain holes & trenches
  • Reinstate excavations & pavement surfaces after utility network construction
  • Operate powered tools & equipment for routine & predictable requirements
  • Slinger Signaller Operations

 

Phase 4: (11 weeks) Work Placement

This Phase allows candidates to apply the skills learned in Phase 3 to a real life work environment.

 

Phase 5: (11 weeks) Simulated Site Training at Mount Lucas

In this final phase of your training at Mount Lucas, you’ll bring together the knowledge and skills you’ve built to work confidently and independently. This stage focuses on mastering the more intricate aspects of your practical work and applying your expertise with minimal guidance. You’ll also complete the remaining modules required for your diploma, ensuring you’re fully prepared for a successful career in the construction industry. This phase solidifies your ability to work professionally, paving the way for your future roles in the field.

CPCS – Blue Competent Operators Card

A five year card that is renewable. Demonstrable skills required are:

  • Health, safety and environment awareness through the CITB Health, safety and environment test
  • Underpinning knowledge and understanding through the CPCS Theory Test
  • Operating ability through the CPCS Practical Test
  • Proven operating competence through achievement of a relevant SVQ or NVQ.

Moving from a Trained Operator (Red) card to a Competent Operator (Blue) card?

The requirements to obtain this card are that you:

  • Hold a valid CPCS Trained Operator card on the category that must be within the 12 month grace period
  • Pass the relevant CITB Health, safety and environment test
  • Achieve a SVQ or NVQ, with the appropriate units relevant to the category

To apply for the card upon achievement of the requirements you will need to download and complete Application to Upgrade to a full CPCS Competent Operator Card (F1/2).

Working directly towards a Competent Operator (Blue) card?

The requirements to obtain this card are to:

  • Provide proof of achievement of the SVQ or NVQ for the relevant units to the category being applied for and provide this to the CPCS Test Centre upon undertaking the CPCS Practical Test
  • Pass the relevant CITB Health, safety and environment test
  • Achieve the CPCS Theory Test (within two years of the CITB Health, safety and environment test)
  • Achieve the CPCS Practical Test (within six months of the CPCS Theory Test and within two years of the CITB Health, safety and environment test)

Both CPCS Theory and Practical Tests are delivered by an accredited CPCS Test Centre. On achievement of the CPCS Practical Test, the CPCS Test Centre will request the CPCS Competent Operator card on your behalf. On receipt of your first Competent Operator card, you will be sent a CPCS Logbook. The role of the Logbook is to record life-long learning and evidence towards the renewal of a Competent Operator card.

Adding more categories and/or endorsements

If you want to add new categories or further endorsements, you are required to (in this order):

  • Provide proof of achievement of the SVQ or NVQ for the relevant units to the category being applied for and provide this to the CPCS Test Centre upon undertaking the CPCS Practical Test
  • Pass the relevant CITB Health, safety and environment test
  • Achieve the CPCS Practical Test (within six months of the CPCS Theory Test and within two years of the CITB Health, safety and environment test).
  • Dependant on category/endorsement being added you may be required to achieve the CPCS Theory Test (within two years of the CITB Health, safety and environment test).

On achievement of the CPCS Practical Test, the CPCS Test Centre will request the CPCS Competent Operator card on your behalf.

Return to Work route

The requirements for this route are to make an Out of Work Declaration by:

  • Contacting the CPCS Helpline on 0844 815 7274, where you confirm you are currently out of work.
  • A confirmation letter will be issued, which can be shown to potential employers outlining the steps required by you to enable you to return to full Scheme Membership, along with the appropriate application form.
  • When you have found employment, you can then apply for a six month temporary card.To obtain this card you need:
  • A valid relevant CITB Health, safety and environment test pass (within two years of the date of application receipt)
  • On achievement of the requirements you will need to complete the Application for a Return to work 6 month CPCS card (F1/6) issued. This can be found on the reverse of the confirmation letter

Once you have obtained your six month temporary card, you can fully re-enter the scheme (at the same level previously held) by applying for an renew your Competent Operator (Blue) card.

CSCS – Red New Entrant Card

This card is available if you are a trainee and are registered for a qualification that leads to a skilled CSCS card (in the majority of cases a NVQ/SVQ). Please note: SSSTS, SMSTS and NEBOSH General will not be accepted as routes to a Trainee card.

HSE & CPCS Renewals

The CITB Health, Safety & Environment test helps raise standards across the industry.

The Operatives test ensures workers have a minimum level of health, safety and environmental awareness before going on site.

All tests last for 45 minutes and have 50 questions. The test is made up of behavioural case studies and knowledge questions to check your understanding of how to behave and raise your awareness of health, safety and environmental issues.

All tests include the behavioural case study questions and the five core knowledge sections of:

 

  • Legal and management
  • Health and welfare
  • General safety
  • High-risk activities
  • Environment

The cost for the Health Safety & Environmental Test is as follows:

6-month temporary HS&E card (cannot be renewed): €50

Changeover (CSCS IRE – CPCS UK) & (CPCS UK – CSCS IRE)

Transfer of your SOLAS CSCS Plant Operator’s card for a Blue CPCS Plant Operator card.

 

The CPCS requirements for SOLAS CSCS plant cardholders to gain a Blue CPCS (UK) plant operator card are as follows:

 

  • Applicants must hold a valid SOLAS CSCS plant registration card.
  • Applicants must have NEVER held the skills they wish to transfer on a UK CPCS card prior at any stage, if so please contact us regarding a CPCS renewal.
  • Applicants must have successfully completed the Construction Skills Health, Safety and Environment test within the last two years
  • Applicants must complete the CPCS Skills and Experience Interview for each category
  • Applicants must complete the CPCS Theory Test for each category

Applicants must complete the CPCS F1/4 application form (Form completed at the training centre after changeover procedure is successfully completed and all requirements have been met)

Prices: €50.00 per interview & €50.00 per theory please note applicants must complete an Interview and Theory for each category of plant they wish to transfer.


The process for CPCS cardholders to gain the Irish SOLAS equivalent (CSCS) are as follows:

  1. Please contact SOLAS on 015332500 / rpq@solas.ie with your request to have your UK CPCS Skills recognised on as SOLAS CSCS card.
  2. Submit any required evidence SOLAS requests to them, as per their instructions.
  3. SOLAS will then accept/decline your application, if you are successful, we (Mount Lucas Training Centre) will receive a referral from SOLAS on behalf of you to attend the training centre to complete the following requirements :
    1. Skills & Experience interview (professional discussion about your experience on the particular item of plant you are transferring. Must be completed for each category of plant you wish to transfer.
    2. CSCS Technical theory test (Irish theory test for CSCS Plant operations) includes 30 multiple-choice questions. The applicant must successfully complete the CSCS theory for each category of the plant they wish to transfer.

Fee: The fee per category is €85.00 payable on the day by card, cash or cheque.

Overview: Please contact SOLAS 1st to go through the approvals process. Once you have been successful in this process Mount Lucas will receive your referral and contact you to arrange the above requirements (1&2).

Upon successful completion of the requirements, you will be issued with a yellow CSCS Experienced operator card.
