Skilled Utilities Operator Traineeship

The Skilled Utilities Operator Traineeship is a fully funded 13-month training programme which will provide you with the skills and knowledge you need to deliver infrastructure for utilities companies. 

Upon successful completion of the Traineeship, you will achieve a CABWI Level 2 Diploma in Network Construction Operations – Water Main Layer (Self Lay & Distribution) as well as many essential industry-recognised training qualifications. 

The simulated site training at Mount Lucas, as well as a recognised qualification, will prepare you for a career in a progressive industry with many pathways for promotion and self-employment. 

In order to participate on this programme, you must be at least 18 years old, be reliable, have a strong work ethic and be willing to work as part of a team in an outdoor environment.

Phase 1 Weeks  1-12Simulated site training at Mount Lucas

  • Induction, Safe-pass, Manual Handling, First Aid 
  • Abrasive Wheels Training, Health and Safety Awareness 
  • Concreting & Kerbing 
  • Confined Space Training 
  • Asbestos Awareness 
  • Working at Heights 
  • Water Hygiene 
  • Steel Fixing 
  • Lay Cobble Brick 
  • Lay Paving 
  • Gravity Pipe Systems – 300mm concrete pipes
  • CSCS Site Dumper Operations (New Entrant)

Phase 2 Weeks 13-21Work-based Learning (Work placement)

Phase 3 Weeks 22-31Simulated site training at Mount Lucas

  • Creating and maintaining an efficient, effective, safe and secure environment in utilities network construction
  • Install equipment for safe working on sites and on the highway
  • Locate and avoid supply apparatus
  • Excavate & maintain holes & trenches
  • Reinstate excavations & pavement surfaces after utility network construction
  • Operate powered tools and equipment for routine and predictable requirements

Phase 2 Weeks 32-40Work-based Learning (Work placement)

Phase 3 Weeks 41-50Simulated site training at Mount Lucas

    • Joining materials:  
    • By electrofusion processes 
    • By butt fusion processes 
    • By mechanical means 
    • Install water mains 
    • Conduct pressure and soundness testing 
    • Restore water network components to operational condition by repair 
    • CSCS 360 Excavator Operations 
    • Road reinstatement 
    • Impact moling
